Thursday

1st Team v Pheonix West Indians

Well Hello,

Now the next 2 games are really important. Why? Well I will tell you:

They are the last 2 games of the 1st half of the season. Yes really.
They are the bottom 2 teams in the league.
Getting 2 wins will put us in good shape at the half way point.
Getting 2 wins will put them right in the sheep dip.

Sid and Lawrence have been unfortunately dropped to the seconds. I know it was a really tough decision to make and hopefully those picked in the 1st XI will reward the faith shown.

Tom Dudding, Sid, Matt Hildrew, Lawrence and a new Sri Lankan chap will all be pushing hard for 1st team places this weekend. With Greggie away and Henry Potter around from next week we have a strong squad and we should all be working hard to ensure that our place in the 1st team is warranted.

Get some practice in. Get some carbohydrates in on Friday night. Keep hydrated through out the week, not just on Saturday morning.

1. Ali McArthur
2. Simon Bachelor
3. Edward Humphreys C
4. Hugo Hanchet
5. Pierre Bell
6. Dave Sherwin
7. Duncan Singh

Wednesday

1st XI v Chew Magna Carter

Let's not get too panicky and downbeat on ourselves. We have only lost two games.

We have to remember that we are playing in a higher league with a slightly weaker squad! Our availability hasn't been fantastic, I'm as much to blame as anyone, and for this I apologise!

That said, we started far worse 2 seasons ago and we rallied around to have a fantastic end of season to aviod relegation. A win on Saturday would ensure that we have had a more than adequate start to the season. We are currently mid table, and above Cleeve! So let's put things into perspective.

I realise it's our batting that has let the side down over the past month, but we bat as a team as we field as a team. When the weather improves and the tracks get harder the roles will hopefully reverse, so I don't want to hear bowlers being negative about batsman etc.

I haven't lost confidence in the team or in the ability of its members. I hope people haven't lost sight of their personal role, as it hasn't changed, and the overall purpose is to win cricket matches.

There are still many positives to look to. Our bowling and fielding has been consistently good so far - long may this continue! The team spirit is still there, it just needs a bit of a lift!

That said lets focus on the game on Saturday away v Chew Magna. Unfortunately, I have made one change to the team for Saturday and with much regret have released Dave to play in the 2's this weekend. However, again this should be seen as a positive and a chance for him to open the innings, spend time at the crease, and hopefully score plenty of runs to give him confidence for when he returns to the team - and he will return to the team! Just because he is not playing for the 1st's on Saturday, he is still a very important member of this team! (as is everyone who plays for the 1st XI)

Let's all try and meet at the ground at 11:00 for a net and team bonding and then we can travel in convey!

Failand & Portbury 1st XI v Chew Magna, Away, Saturday 30th May 2009.

1st XI vs Twyford House XI

Right Gents,

Please find below the 1st team to play Twyford House this Saturday.

Fantastic team performance last Saturday from everyone involved - Well done. However, we must maintain that standard this weekend - and throughout the season!

In light of this, please be at ground for 1:00 latest! and from 11:30am for nets!

Sadly, for Saturday's game we lose Paul Nice (injury), George Fellowes (imprisonment), and Dave Sherwin (Anger Management Therapy in Chicago).

We welcome back Henry Humphreys for his first league game since returning from Hong Kong.

Friday

1st XI @ St Mary Redcliffe, Saturday 2nd May

Sorry for the delay, but please find below the selection for Saturday's game away at St Mary Redcliffe!

On Tuesday night I was hit by the sudden and very sad news that we may lose one of our most loyal and under appreciated/valued team members for the season.

So, we have from 1 o'clock Saturday to Sunday am to show William Humphrey's that the love is definitely still there, and convince him that he should be heading back west every Saturday noon (May-September), sacrificing his ONLY day off - to play Cricket with us. ...

Winning might help!

William Humphrey's Appreciation 1st XI @ St Mary Redcliffe, Saturday 2nd May:
1. A. McArthur
2. S. Bachelor
3. E. Humphreys
4. H. Hanchet
5. G. Fellowes
6. W. Humphreys
7. D. Sherwin
8. G. Humphreys
9. T. Isom
10. P. Nice
11. Tony Hadley (Lippe)

I have no idea where the ground is except the address: Scotland Lane, Brislington, Bristol.

Why clubs can't put a real address and/or postcode in the Handbook or on the website is beyond me!

I will try and get a map/better directions at lunchtime and forward them on! If anyone has played there before it may be an idea to email some directions or map etc.

Please be at ground for 1:00 LATEST!

We need to do a few fielding drills and re-familiarise ourselves with each other beforehand.

Much Love Ali

However, we welcome back George Fellowes (following a sabbatical in Normandy), Charlie Walker and Matt Hildrew.

SATURDAY 28th JUNE - BRISTOL SRI LANKANS (A)

THE FAILAND MACHINE RUMBLES ON TO BARROW GURNEY

Well done to everyone involved in the thrashing of Carsons last Saturday. Not least to Mark Walker whose maiden ton was the fastest century ever by a Failand & Portbury player.

I think it is fair to say that his beautifully crafted innings will be talked about for years to come. Even the great Glen Cambridge was impressed by Mark's timing and strength in an area in which he is only too familiar. Congratulations Mark!

Another solid knock by Simon continues his prolific start to the season, with very important contributions from Ed and Hugo.

Our bowlers continue to perform as a unit, and it is pleasing to see George return to the form he has shown throughout the campaign with strong support from both Tony and Tom.

We travel to Barrow Gurney on Saturday to face a Bristol Sri Lankan side who must be scarred by the memories of last season. It would be nice to crash their 'Champagne Party' once again.

There is only 1 change to the team as we welcome back Dave Sherwin to replace the unavailable Matt Bowes.

Team to play Bristol Sri Lankans away on Saturday - please be at ground by 1:00pm:

1. A. McArthur
2. S. Bachelor
3. E. Humphreys
4. H. Hanchet
5. W. Humphreys

Now we must face a tough test away to Phoenix West Indians on Saturday at Kingsweston Lane, Shirehampton. Unfortunately I cannot provide a link to a map of where the ground is!

Blagdon at home Saturday
After 2 weeks on the road and following another good win on Saturday v YMCA, we return home to face Blagdon. Unfortunately we will be without the services of Egg Humphreys - flying out for the Canadian Grand Prix, and Charlie Walker - who returns to his studies.

However, we welcome back Jeff Astle fresh from Vegas, and George Fellow(e)s fresh from his interview with the Evening Post. Also - having bailed us out in the last game - we have managed to hold onto Mark Walker for a second league outing . Good on him! 1st XI team for YMCA (away) Saturday 31st May
Well done to everyone involved in the win over Frampton Cotterell on Saturday. Not least to Tony Lippe for the first 5 wicket innings of the season. Very well supported by George Humphreys, a revelation so far this season, and Hugo for his second consecutive fifty.

We now travel to YMCA for another big game. Let's not forget that they did the double on us last season, and are 'old chums' of all QEH members of the team.

There are a couple of changes to the side. We welcome back the Walkers for their first league game of the season, replacing the unavailable Jeff Astle and the unfortunate Matt Bowes. Like the returning Mark Day, I am sure Matt will get much more of a game in a very strong 2nd XI this weekend.

Please be at ground for 1:00pm, and I will try not to get lost this time.

1st Team v YMCA:
1. A. McArthur
2. S. Bachelor
3. E. Humphreys
4. C. Walker
5. H. Hanchet
6. W. Humphreys

1st XI for Frampton Cotterell
After two unfortunate losses over the weekend we must now lift our heads and travel to Frampton Cotterill.

At times we played brilliant cricket over the weekend, with some very good individual performances (Ed Humphreys, Hugo Hanchet - Saturday, Simon Bachelor - Sunday), so let's not get too down on ourselves. However... the over rate was slow on Satuday, which is ultimately my responsibility, but despite not having a spinner and watching (and searching for) balls being hit into the field 12 times by a former semi-pro, we can be quicker - so let's not get into the routine of disputing field positions after every fall toss, half volley and long hop.

As consistency of selection has been the key for 2008, only 1 change has been made to the team for Saturday. Matt Bowes comes in replacing Mark Day (who is unavailable), to provide a variation to the attack that was lacking on Saturday. Let's remember that we are a very good cricket team with a strong morale, so lets get back on the winning trail this weekend... ...and enjoy ourselves.

Please be at the ground for 1:00pm with the possibility of nets at Failand earlier in the day.

Following a great team effort in the field on Saturday we now face a much sterner test in this weekend's 'Double Header'.

It is very pleasing to select an unchanged side for the league game home v Cleeve on Saturday, and a strong cup side for the game home v Timsbury on Sunday. Sorry to those who missed out, but hopefully you will get a good work out in the 2nds - who are currently playing very good cricket.

1st XI 10th May
Following a very successful weekend with 2 wins (1 league & 1 cup), combining great team performances with inspired individual ones (Simon Bachelor - Saturday, Charlie Walker - Sunday), we visit Long Ashton hoping to play with the same intensity of last week, and less of the complacency and 'emotional' fragility of Sunday.

Unfortunately it was felt that changes had to be made by the Selection Committee to bring a greater balance to the side for Saturday. It was a very hard decision to release Mark Day to the 2nd's but we hope that he will bowl many more overs and re-find that terrific form and consistency he showed last summer, subsequently returning to the 1sts ASAP.

Otherwise the team is unchanged.

It was great to see so many of you up at nets yesterday evening - top effort!
